Volunteer work in Japan - Ombry - 2014-01-06

I am starting to get serious about planning my trip to Japan in April/May and one of the things I would like to do is volunteer work. Does anyone have any recommendations? (or condemnations?)

I'm part of a local volunteer group that does environmental things (mostly weeding and planting native plants, sometimes picking up rubbish or observing wildlife to collect data), so something like that would be ideal. Being female, poor at Japanese and generally not good at standing up for myself, I'm a little nervous about the idea of staying with a host and would probably rather just do something where I can sort out my own accommodation (am I being overly cautious?). I'm sure most of the people who organise these things are lovely but you do hear stories...

Please share your volunteering experiences or any resources that you know of!

I plan on working here over the summer https://www.workaway.info/151984335999-en.html

A friend of mine went to the same place for a couple of months last summer and really enjoyed it. Said he'd put a good word in for me Tongue (he's James in the feedback section)

The other volunteering opportunities in Japan look pretty good, too. Some of them focus solely on language exchange.

Funnily enough I am also planning volunteer work in Japan at the moment for May - August time. I will be doing WWOOFING, I have done this before and will be doing it again, and can not recommend it enough. This is staying with a host but it is really not as bad as you think and I have seen more females doing it than guys.

Check out this thread http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=5128 where a few post down (and another one a few more down) I talk about my experiences with wwoofing.

I could also recommend a host which I have stayed with before and will be again. Hell we could even be at the same place at same time *creepy wink*
