Whoah! I'm probably late on this, but I just found out that Google Translate gives a popup with the original text for each sentence!
So, the Japanse to English is pretty bad, but you get at least a rough idea of what it is about, which is very helpful when looking up the words and grammar; and then, you can copy/paste the original Japanese text form the popup!

wow yeah the pop-ups are pretty cool ... didn't know about that... kudos to google. Although the lack of nuance recognition in the programing still irks me a bit.

Japanese->English machine translations still have much larger problems to sort out before worrying about nuance. The current state of the art isn't much more than a 1:1 word replacement and a bit of basic re-ordering.
