...And she asked me if I could set her up so she could continue learning English!

However, she doesn't seem to keen on the whole, "read/listen to anything and then make a flashcard out of it." I've tried to find a good pre-made English learning deck for a Japanese speaker; but the "English" section on Anki is actually the box people put any damn deck they want in it, it seems.

Has anyone had any experience with teaching English with Anki? Are there any pre-made Japanese to English decks you can recommend?

The quickest way to find good decks for Japanese learners is to search for 英検 (Eiken). If your host mother's english is pretty low, set her up with a 3 or 4級 deck. The levels are similar to how JLPT is set up, but at the top it goes 1 -> 準1 -> 2 -> 準2 and then 3,4,5 (Hardest -> Easiest). Usually kids in school in Japan take these tests but I bet most adults that haven't studied would still find it just as hard since they've probably forgotten. Vocabulary is probably the best 'bang for your buck' too in time:reward.

Btw, people passing level 1-2 stuff are usually high schoolers. Most 3rd year middle schoolers should be able to pass level 3 if they are studying.

Also look at the "GSL General Service List" decks. And finally, just do a "Find text" on the page for "Japanese" and you'll find E-J decks.

Ultimately you will have to download the deck and look at the cards and decide whether its right for her or not. No one here knows her level or what she is looking for so it'd be hard to suggest.

Also, you could probably use a Core2k deck too. There wouldn't be any audio files for the English sentences though.

I've also seen there are decks to go with the New Horizon textbooks for JHS, which she might find useful too...
