Breaking Bad *Spoilers for finale* - Hirakana - 2013-09-30 So I had to postpone my Japanese studies today, because I was fanboying all over the carpet as I watched the finale of Breaking Bad. *SPOILERS* So I loved the ending. It was kind of poetic the way Walt got to "set everything straight" before he went on his own terms surrounded by what he loved. There were no loose ends (besides what happens to Brock) and although it wasn't a "happy" ending, it was certainly an ending in which justice was served. I'm glad Jesse didn't die and got to kill Todd with his own hands. I like to think he's looking after Brock now. I loved Walt's plan to get the money in his kids' hands. I'm happy that Skyler will almost certainly be acquitted now that they've discovered the source of the blue meth. What were your thoughts on the ending? Breaking Bad *Spoilers for finale* - faneca - 2013-10-01 Remember: *SPOILER ALERT* (If you still want to read, select the invisible text, but be warned: it'll ruin the series for you forever if you haven't watched/finished it yet ;-) Finally done. Oh my farting dog. Simply awesome. ----------- The Shakespearean ending is... (sorry for quoting you, but I simply can't do better) kind of poetic, indeed. Almost everything was tied up appropriately -- I just secretly wished Walt had got the opportunity to measure the purity of Jessie's last cook (his masterpiece, if you like) only to find it was the best ever, better than his own (think 99.9% or so ;-). I don't know why, but I would never had forgiven the writers for not saving Pinkman, and the way they did was wonderful. OTOH, while I'm really sad for them, I'm cool about other characters' (collateral) deaths: Gale Boetticher (found him endearing, didn't you?), Andrea (Brock's mother), Steve and Hank... but, well, you know... meth happens :-P. Hank was also kind of a "cheerful mastermind" on his own right, a nice counterpoint for Heisenberg, and the only one able to expose him (it's a far-off comparison, I know, but their relationship sometimes reminded me of Death Note's "L" and 「夜神 月」). From a general standpoint, I loved the uneasiness this series made me feel every time and its always-accelerating downwards spiral of events (with the single exception, granted, of the awkward, unsubstantial filler chapter "The Fly"). One of my friends loved the series but had to stop watching it long ago because he couldn't stand that kind of uncomfortable feelings anymore (!). I think it's the first time I've seen a reaction like this (that is, outside of (a) boredom and/or lack of empathy for the characters, or (b) gore, terror and the like). I also loved the performance, the cast was finely chosen and the actors did a great job giving life to the well designed characters. Some of the technical aspects are worth mentioning, too (camera, photography or music come to mind as remarkable points). I'll finish with a small digression: what kind of person was Walt, after all? Bad? Good? Just human? He obviously did horrible things (indirectly provoked his brother-in-law's death, didn't hesitate to use others' life for his plans -think Brock, for instance-, flooded the streets with his drugs -actually, that could have been a good action, since he raised the overall quality [just kidding] ;-). But he also achieved incredible things: he took down several major international drug distribution networks, all by himself (something the -fictional- DEA would never dream of), he finally got his family (part of) the money he sought so desperately to give them for the times to come after his departure (something he would never dream of being a teacher)... --------- Any thoughts? |
