I wanted to adjust the production cards to my preferences. For example, I wanted to have sentence-clozed sentences that contain no furigana. His one do have furigana. In the end I included both variants. I wanted to have hints to make it easier for me to differentiate similar words. etc.

Yeah, I do the same thing. The first thing I do when using a pre-made deck is export and make personal alterations in a spreadsheet before re-importing. You have to shape your own arse-groove before it's a comfortable fit, you know. Tongue

Hmmn, I don't use core, but all my cards have furigana; but with rt and transparency settings so that I only -see- the furigana when I mouseover.

I snagged they idea from someone else in this forum, but I have this in my card styling (shared between cards):
ruby rt { font-size:15px; opacity:0.0; }
ruby rt:hover { opacity:0.5; }

.cardback ruby rt { opacity:1.0; }

The first two lines give me a muted look furigana-on-mouseover, the third line lets me span the backs of my card with style="cardback" to give me always-on furigana on the back of the card.

Yes, it's completely safe to do so. I made a second deck called "delete me" that contains only audio and images files. Those files names are the same ones as used by "Core 2k/6k/10K Further Optimized PIC/SOUND".

I had to make a "dummy deck" in order to store the audio/images on Anki servers.

Hello,
Some time ago, I imported this optimized Core 10k deck into Anki. After doing that, I realized that it had synced with Anki Web, which was fine with me, but then also synced to my iPhone, which saturated its memory!

I therefore erased the deck from the iPhone, which seemed to cause it to be suppressed also on Anki Web as well as in the desktop database.

Whereas I recovered sufficient space on the iPhone to use it normally, I wondered what happened to the huge bunch of media which had also been imported. Does Anki keep a dependence between the cards and the media, so that erasing a deck automatically cleans the media folder from the correrponding mp3 or jpg files? Or does one have to suppress those files manually?

Thanks, this makes sense to me.
But, also in connection with the related question which I posted just following this one, your answer seems to imply that suppressing the decks will leave the media files untouched for use by the other deck in the same database. Is this right?

I recommend turning off media sync in order to avoid filling up space.

By default Anki will only delete media files after clicking on "Check unused media button". There is one on the desktop client, ankiweb, iphone, etc.

Anki checks which files are used by looking for text inside nodes. For example: "[sound:196V.mp3]" would indicate that audio file 196V.mp3 is needed, "<img src=196.jpg>...</img>" would indicate that files 196.jpg is needed.

All files that doesn't have corresponding entries inside on of cards will be deleted during next time when Anki checks for unused media.

Great! This seems quite reasonable. So hopefully I can reclaim even more space on my iPhone !

Actually, I prefer to keep media synced for other decks which I am continuously updating (which includes adding new media). Therefore, following a suggestion I received on the Anki forum, I decided to keep to distinct profiles in my desktop Anki for "sync'ed" and "unsync'ed" decks.

After you download a deck containing media files all it's files will be copied into folder Anki/user_name/collection.media . Whenever Anki needs to load image/audio files it will look for files within that folder.

The procedure used to remove unused media file simply checks whenever there are files in folder "collection.media" that are not used by any cards withing any of your decks. It doesn't matter if you suspend all cards or not. You have to delete whole deck in order for Anki to know that those cards are not used anymore.

I've been doing only production cards so far. It worked fine for first 2k words, but for cards in range 2k-6k I found that there are just too many words that are either synonyms or ones that I would never use in real life. So I decided to switch to recognition cards after doing first 2500 cards with production mode. However, I wanted to do production as well for a few selected cards that I find useful.

Here is the solution that I came out with.
I want to change the format of recognition card to something like this:

Front:
{{^tags}}
Recognition card
{{/tags}}
{{#tags}}
Production card
{{/tags}}

Back:
Back card

The way this works is whenever tags field is empty the Recognition card will be displayed. If it is not then the Production Card will be displayed.

For if by marking the card the card will switch from Recognition move to Production mode, because the field "tags" will be equal to "marked".

What do you think about that idea?

The goal is to have 20-30% of cards in production mode, ones that are useful in real life. The remaining 70-80% of cards would be in recognition mode. The main point here is that you can start doing the recognition deck and whenever you feel that one card is useful to be remembered it can be switched to production mode.

EDIT:
I did some testing on iPhone. It works as expected. I didn't publish those cards yet, as I'm not sure whenever people will like it or not. I guess, it may be confusing for some people.

I would prefer to add additional field for that purpose. Maybe, "reverse_ProductionRecognition". However, right now editing on iOS is broken in the Anki app. It may take a while before it gets fixed. I reported that issue like two weeks ago.
The developed said that he will rewrite the code as soon as he drops support for iOS 4.3

Hi. Sorry, I forgot to mention that you have to first click on the first column in order to sort all entries in the browser window.

Then you have to do the procedure that I described in the deck.
Clicking on re-position changes the order of all cards schedules to be the same as all cards in the current browser windows.

I'll have to update the description to include the first step that is missing.

Then you can just select and suspend all^^

IF you intend on never doing them whatsoever here's what you can do: click on the core 2k/6k/10k deck and then click browse. There are two buttons [cards...] and [fields...] ---> click on the cards button. Then you will see two pages for different formats for both production and recognition cards; they kind of look like internet browsers a little. Just click on the x on production cards and it will delete them out of your deck.

made 5 cards: vocab-reading, vocab-listening, vocab-reproduction, sentence-reading and sentence-listening
on vocab cards added a link to jisho so i can easily look up the word detail
Added a JLPT level field so I can filter by my next exam material (this took a long time and probably not very accurate)

I don't know what's the best way to do the upgrade. The cards in range 0k-6k are almost final. I'm planning only to update the kanjifield-vocab field for card in that range.

I'm currently 4900/6000 cards into the Core 6k deck. At this rate it will take me two weeks to finish. After that I'll only modify cards in the 6k-10k range.

Also If anyone is interested in adding the JPLT level to their decks I can share a csv file with just two fields (Index and JLPT) that when imported to the deck will populate a JLPT field.
