Number of words for N2 - saborio - 2013-07-24

I have seen conflicting statements about how many words are needed for N2. I have seen 5000 - 6000+ .

This really does effect whether I can take this exam this December as vocab is the only thing holding me back. I think I can reach 5000 but 6000 is too much I think. I simply don't have the time.

Thoughts?

there are a couple of decks on anki floating around, but I was looking earlier today, and there's this one which has 4886 cards, but has the most vocab cards of them all it seems. I'd say that the 5000-6000 words includes vocab from levels 5-2, so you probably already know a great deal of them anyway...

5000 words will do for N2 as a lower limit. I think the pass mark is 60%, so if you know around 3,500~ words fairly well you should be OK. Just do your best and don't worry about it so much. You also have the chance to guess on the ones you don't know and a lot of people have said its easy to use process of elimination.

Mostly in the JLPT N2 they will make annotations for difficult words and explain them but for me it was always a hassle jumping down to the end of the page and read the explanations. I was blessed with 12.000 vocabularies I knew, so I could read smooth and jump to the questions straightforward. I'd recommend knowing at least 6k, better more Smile

This was you back in April right?

Quote:Completed Genki 1, Genki 2 and 'a course in modern Japanese 2' (slightly more advanced than Genki 2)
At around 650 kanji and 3000 vocab
I guess your over 3500 now? That's probably enough to scrape through the test if you know those words inside out. Still I'd push for 6k.

Knowing more vocab than what is expected really helped me with a lower JLPT test -- the vocab section becomes more of a 'warm up' than a test. Whilst if you know just enough the vocab section won't be so easy.

being able to read quickly with reasonably accurate comprehension will be more important than having a specific number of words down. Having said that, with the practice required to reach the level of reading speed to pass comfortably you'd probably have some knowledge of over 5000-6000 words. Maybe 10,000 or so ably to be understand on paper in context. I'd focus on doing a lot of reading more so than trying to memorize a jlpt wordlist. ie. Do past papers. You'll learn a bunch of the required vocab on the way.
