@RawToast

Thanks! Yeah, it takes a bit of fooling around with it, but I think I'm getting used to Anki now. Smile

Does anyone know if there's a way to run a simple conditional test on the contents of a field? I want something like

If(tags field has a 'leech' tag in it) {display the word 'leech' on front of card}
else {display nothing}

I checked the manual, but it only talks about conditional display depending on whether or not a field is EMPTY. I don't tend to use many tags, so that sort of works for some decks.. but I'm hoping for something more general.

The way anki deals with leeches by default doesn't do much for me. Suspending the card really isn't a solution at all, and I don't use the whole 'filtered decks' thing. I tried displaying the tags on front with one deck that has no other tags but 'leech' or 'marked' on it. It seemed to help a bit. But like I say, I am looking for a general solution because lots of my decks have a bunch of random tags and it would clutter up the front if I did the same thing with them.

Even though I have it set to 20 new cards a day, I really only get about 4. Is there any setting I need to touch up?

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - slako - 2014-05-01

I'm learning core10k but without images and deleted them. However when I go to Anki and check media it will say images missing. Is there anyway to delete the image calling of the deck?

Is the deck contained in another deck? It sounds like it since the number of new cards you get is not constant. The limit of new cards applies to the deck and its subdecks. If you have the below structure for your decks (all have limit of 20 new cards/day), and you learn 16 new cards from Japanese::Genki2, then you can only learn 4 new cards from Japanese::RTK.

The warning means that your notes still have references to the deleted images. Copy the name of one deleted file and search for it in your deck. Hopefully, the image references are in its own field that you can just delete from the note type.

Yeap, mine looks like this ;
- Core 2k/6k/10k Optimized
- Core 0 - 10k
Core 06k
Core 10k-6k

Any idea how to fix this? I usually just click on the main deck title.

You need to create a separate options group for 'Core 0 - 10k' that has a limit that is at least the sum of its subdecks' limits, e.g. if the two subdecks has each a limit of 20 new cards, the main deck needs a limit of at least 40 new cards.

So I am planning to get an android smart phone for doing my anki reviews. . .

I will have these decks on ankidroid and of course sync to my laptop

-(6.79MB.)Core 2k/6k/10K Further Optimized PIC/SOUND/PITCH ACCENT v23[https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/702754122] of 9567 notes {recognition only}

-Kanji Koohii imported spread sheet of 2058 notes

I have 2 quetions

1.So the media(vocab sound,sentence sound,pics) all amount to 712.04MB.Which is so be so I would be syncing that all the time or it will just be once. Also would 12000 notes syncing and progress data could be sync that easily from my laptop to my android.

2.What Android device would I have to get? I am afraid that if I get the wrong one sound,pictures,text wont fit the android smartphone screen. Are there like "system requirements" for it to work?

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - Splatted - 2014-05-23

1. It's supposed to only synch the changes so it shouldn't matter if you have large media files. That being said, I remember that when 2.0 first came out there were a lot of people complaining that it was synching everything every time, and I'm not sure what was causing that or if it was resolved, so you might want to do some research on that.

2. No idea sorry.

Question: I'm thinking of installing Anki on my laptop.

Has anyone noticed it causing performance issues?

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - Vempele - 2014-05-24

Anki's been running for 31 hours. According to Process Explorer, it has used 35.3 seconds of CPU time, so no.

So I'm trying to set up my Anki deck to use the KanjiStrokeOrders font for Kanji. I followed the instructions in the Anki manual, and I think I did it right, because the proper font now displays in the Anki client and on Ankiweb. But the iPhone app (Anki Flashcards) isn't displaying the new font. I know it uploaded to the app, because my first sync after making the change was huge (~17,000 kb, roughly the size of the font), but it's still displaying with the old typrewriter-style font.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - LX2010 - 2014-05-30

@john_sabater

1. It syncs once, unless you delete some audio files on your pc etc. Takes a really long time. Its possible to disable the audio & image sync if you want.

2. Any phone that's not too old should be fine. I personally don't use the pics in decks as they don't seem to help much but I have a Heisig deck to look up primitives, requiring me to use the search feature at times. Searching through all the decks can take some time if you have a lot of cards but this doesn't seem to bother me on my newer devices (nexus 7 2012). You can control the font of words easily through settings in the app too.

Interestingly, I prefer reviewing cards on my phone a lot more than on my PC. Perhaps its the dictionary feature which helps a lot. You get to do quick lookups on aedict.

In Anki's Vocab Browser I couldn't get the Find&Replace Function to replace a "newline"-character - having "regex mode" turned on.
I tried several ways, but only inserting "\R" as search term replaced "newline" but also every occurrence of "r" which is impractical.

Has anybody experience in with this or can suggest another smart way to deal with this?

Seems like answers here are not given so regularly as it should or could be. So I will give subsequent users a hint.

Go to https://anki.tenderapp.com

Chances are good you find some information to solve the problem, and folks might be more responsive.

Regarding the Anki issue in question it was helpful to get access to the HTML-code behind the field content with "Shift+Ctrl+x". Regex search & replace then worked smoothly.

I would like to start to use one of the CorePlus decks but would like delete the words I have already learned from reading books. I can get down to 15,000 words in the Core Plus deck by excluding Core10k cards (already finished Core10k) but I have an additional 10,500 word deck I would like to compare to the remaining cards. The two decks have different schemas. Is there any easy way to remove duplicates between two non-matching decks? I also have at my disposal Excel 2013 and Open Office if I can somehow do it that way. I am not very skilled with spreadsheets though and would need some help if that is the only route to pursue. Thanks!

You can export the new deck from anki as csv. Then re-import the csv into the new deck. Check a checkbox something like "skip duplicate entries" and it will only import the unique entries. If you tag the cards in your old deck, you be able to know which are the imported cards and which are new.

I hope this helps.

I guess I'll try that, thanks. I will just have to add fields to make the decks match.

It is possible in Anki to make more than one card from a single note? I know it is possible with cloze deletion, because it makes one card for every cloze in one note. It is possible to do something similar with other note's types?

For example:

FRONT:
Vocab: $v[i]
Sentence: "{{$v[1]::教科書}}を持ってきてくださいね。{{$v[2]::毎日}}{{$v[3]::使います}}から。"

BACK:

Furigana: "教科書[きょうかしょ]を 持[も]ってきてくださいね。 毎日[まいにち] 使[つか]いますから。"
Translation: "Please bring your textbook with you. We use it every day."

---

This will make three cards, for example card1:

教科書
(教科書を持ってきてくださいね。毎日使いますから。)

---

In this way you can test yourself with only one thing per card, but there is not duplication of data with consequent inefficiencies in the anki database.

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - Vempele - 2014-06-15

Cards are just templates for displaying the data of the note. Yes, you can make multiple cards for any note type.

I think the posts above answer my question, but could somebody break it down a bit more for me: I want to create a verb conjugation deck. I want to put in, say, 500 of the most common Japanese verbs. I want it to test me by showing me the word in Japanese/kanji/dictionary form, and then asking me for a randomised verb conjugation (eg. -masu form, or causative, or causative passive, or imperative, or whatever).

How do I do that?

For bonus points, if I have a deck like the shared 'Barron's 501 Japanese Verbs JPN/ENG', which has two fields containing the Japanese word and the English meaning, how would I use those verbs/this deck as the basis for the deck above?

Apologies for being completely useless but any help would be appreciated.

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - yogert909 - 2014-06-23

Unfortunately, Anki cannot randomly pick from a list of conjugations. So you would have to make individual cards for each conjugation. You could make a deck like this by importing your barrons list into excel and copying the dictionary version for each conjugation. Then you would need to manually add all of the conjugations using something like http://www.japaneseverbconjugator.com. Export your spreadsheet as a csv file and import into anki. This seems like a lot of work though. It would probably be a lot easier to just learn the conjugation rules.

yogert909 Wrote:Unfortunately, Anki cannot randomly pick from a list of conjugations.
Actually, you can do it with Javascript. Still, I think picking a random verb (of a specific class) for a specific conjugation is better than picking a random conjugation for a specific verb - the former is one fact, the latter is at least 10 facts. Here's a deck that asks you to conjugate one of 示す,表す to the basic forms (one note per verb type, one card per form):

https://www.dropbox.com/s/it9ohsiwgzza1o9/VerbConjugation2.apkg

{{verbs}} is a space-delimited list of verbs. {{remove}} should be 1 for regular verbs, 2 for する, くる. {{Negative}}, {{Masu}}, etc. are what you add to the verb (minus the last {{remove}} kana) to make the specified form (i.e. the appropriate sound change, if any, plus the characteristic suffix of the form).

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - yogert909 - 2014-06-23

Oops, sorry. I keep forgetting about javascript.

@ Vempele, do you know if javascript works in the iOS version of Anki?

Anki Small Questions Thread - (NO Technical / Troubleshooting Posts) - Vempele - 2014-06-23

No idea, I don't have an iDevice.
