Vocabulary retention - Hirakana - 2013-07-04
I'm using Nukemarine's Optimized Core 6k, and my retention rate is absolutely horrific. 66% for young (I have no mature yet). What I do when learning the cards is read the sentence and word, repeat the audio a few times and make a mnemonic (sometimes). How long should I spend on each card to get the amazing 80-95% retention rates that seem to be so common here?
(it could be possible that I'm on a rough patch as I'm at 550 cards and some of the cards here are near synonyms with very little to discern them from similar cards.)

We have high retention rates because we've had our decks for a while now and there's plenty of mature cards which compensate for the young ones. Just keep going at it, don't worry about retention rates, and it'll solve itself. Once you'll have cards maturing it'll go up considerably.
(also, the beginning is the hardest since everything is new. Once you get more familiar with the language learning new words becomes progressively easier)

Retention scales up over time. Anki is designed for long term, so don't worry too much about your short term retention. What Zgarbas said.

Those 80+ rates are for mature cards, since you don't have any yet, don't worry!

Young / Learning retention rates are usually like 20-50% for a given day. Expect to see 80-90% on cards once they are mature.

Don't worry about retention, let yourself become familiar with the words.
I suggest writing every word two or three times. (motor memory)
20 seconds or less
6-13 seconds for 'good' or 'easy' cards

What everyone else said, and (although this probably isn't trouble for you anymore), you could click "Easy" for days of the week/month, numbers and numbers with counters even if you don't know their readings, and learn them in lists, at your own pace.
For me, I make a mnemonic for practically every new word. It takes me several minutes sometimes to come up with one, and even when I give up on some words, the struggle of trying to make one, along with the writing and re-reading seems to serve as an equally effective memory anchor. Be very generous with time on new cards, so reviewing is faster and easier.
