I got a core 2000 pack from anki and it's just images/audio clips/sentences that I have to either translate from Japanese to English or English to Japanese. Obviously I will not know the majority of them because I'm just still starting out so I was wondering how it's supposed to work?

You could try other learning methods first before switching to Anki. Like print the PDFs from the Printable core 2000 vocabulary list thread, listen to the audio lessons posted in the Audio Lesson Studio thread, or use iKnow's website or the iPhone or Android applications.

I believe the common way to start recognition is with Kanji -> Kana/English, rather than tackling the whole sentence.
