I'll finish RTK1 in 9\10 days and I want to start learning the readings of kanji. I already downloaded 2k\6k japanese core and ko2001 but I wanted to try something different. So I want to ask if its possible to learn readings and basic vocabulary through manga and visual novel with furigana, a good dictionary\translator and Anki.
I read of doing the first 700 kanji in RTK2 but I don't understand how to use it.
For the grammar I've downloaded tae kim's app for ipod touch, is it a good choice?

Sorry if my english isn't that good.

It's very possible to learn vocabulary and kanji readings via manga. Though it will be difficult for a beginner due to lack of grammar knowledge, slang, onomatopoeia. Reading easy manga with furigana should help. If you don't know what to read, you can check out the Recommended Manga Thread http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=10869

Also knowing how to search for kanji in a dictionary by stroke count, radicals or by SKIP method should help as well.

As for Anki, just make decks of vocab/sentence (whatever your preference is) of unknown words you encounter.

I'm not sure if you we're looking for some specific tips or just wanted to know if doing this was a good idea or not. You should do whatever makes you eager to learn. If its manga then go for it! Smile

Wow I just realized I spelled manga wrong lol xD

If you use Windows, you can use Capture2Text together with JGlossator to get glosses for manga.

Interactive Text Hooker and Translation Aggregator can be used to get translations for text in visual novels.

Thanks a lot!
I already know ITH and Translator aggregator, I used them but I didn't get a good translation.

What about RTK2? How should I use it?

PS. I'm on mac, I have a boot camp partition for windows but all my study files are on mac. I found an alternative for capture2text but i'm still searching for jglossator

There's a thing called vomic. It's manga read aloud.

Should you happen to want to save the vids, the url is in .asx file (a text file), it looks like this for example:

By 'translation' do you mean the JParser/MeCab (you really need MeCab installed, otherwise JParser won't work properly either) breakup and furigana generation? In my experience it's accurate most of the time. There are obviously mistakes since it's machine-generated, but you can generally spot this and figure out the correct reading using the popup dictionary, though that might be a bit too much to ask of a beginner (but VNs aren't exactly beginner material to begin with).

Anyway, I think this is the best you can get for visual novels considering they don't include furigana natively. MeCab is probably the most accurate furigana generator freely available and it's even further enhanced by JParser.

I guess it's good.. Not really that bad, for as long as you keep in mind and try to remember what you've read from those manga.. Anyways, can you give me a good manga story with furiganas in it? xD I'd be much interested to read something like that as well.. xD

I like Tokyou Ravens, Hentai ouji to warawanai neko, Nyan-koi, seikoku no ryuu kishi and Tora kiss. I think these manga have furigana and nice story. I hope you like them too.
