RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - anotherjohn - 2016-03-15

I had intended to use my time off work this week to do some major JLPT/reading practice but unfortunately I've become completely engrossed in a programming project and done less Japanese even than normal, so haven't got around to doing any tadoku reading yet.

I might squeeze a bit in this evening but it's not going to be all that much. Looks like my earlier bravado may have been a bit hasty Blush

I shall prepare myself to get pwned Sad

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - RawrPk - 2016-03-15

I'll be having a slow start as well having just taken an in class essay exam and working on online homework assignments due midnight. But there is the weekend to beef up my page count Smile

I'm the last person to say that I would pwn anyone in tadoku as I read really slow even in English xD my real tadoku opponent is my past self.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-03-16

Me too! (Really slow in English). Even though I did reasonably well in the last contest that was largely because most of the heavy hitters didn't take part. I couldn't possibly compete with some of their scores, even reading English.

I think one's own goal is the real opponent. I have lowered mine this time as I don't have as much time to compete.

I love the contest though, as it really is a good motivation for someone as scattered as this doll!

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - Splatted - 2016-03-16

I'll be taking part too but not sure to wht extent. Not really feeling driven at the moment but part of the beauty of readmod is it encourages you to overcome that.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-03-16

Yes, that is really the great thing about the contest, isn't it?

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - jaymonroe - 2016-04-06

I don't know why but I was 100% sure the second 2016 session would start in mid-April, not mid-March. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until June 1st then.

For those of you who are already familiar with it, would you recommend starting with 2 languages at the same time? I can read them both at a lower-intermediate level (and one of them is very similar to my native language).

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - RawrPk - 2016-05-19

Tadoku round in 2 weeks. Just signed up. I'm feeling ambitious and set a steep goal of 1000 pages xD Will I meet it? Probably not but ***** it I'll try anyways.

My goal isn't quite so ambitious (I think I did 300 this time),but I'd have already met it and then some if this round started a couple of days ago.

I've been reading the webnovel 蜘蛛ですが、何か? which has somehow engaged me really well. I'd been following the manga version for a couple of months before realizing it was originally a webnovel.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - yukamina - 2016-05-20

I just registered. I don't have a specific goal, I just plan to read as much as I can.

Oh I've never met that goal before. I usually add a pitiful goal of 50 pages (I read slow) but this time I wanted to light a fire under my butt as they say Wink

As for reading material, I'll be doing manga (I hope to do all of Shirokuma cafe vol 1-5. Then step up Baby Steps) and Let's Read Japanese series by Oxford Brooke's University. I just took a look at the web series, for something as not cute as a spider irl, they made it pretty cute and hilarous xD lol

1000! I'd be happy with a tenth of that Smile

I kind of wish it started this week too. I picked up an ipad and have been reading a lot more. There's so much good content available on the Japanese iBooks.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - RawrPk - 2016-05-21

I doubt I'll be able to meet that goal with my manga reading (5 manga pages = 1 official Tadoku page) but I did estimate that I would hit a little over 130+ ppp with it. I have my Let's Read Japanese series which should bulk up my page count even more.

What kind of books are you reading on Japanese iBooks? I would like to eventually read light novels but no clue where to begin!

Well, web novels are pretty much light novels, minus the proffesional editting, and it's super easy to mine vocab from them. In fact, a number of web novels have been getting LN and/or manga adaptations (all the ones I've ben reading, because I don't have the patience to find treasures among trash in this medium yet).

I think the biggest hurdle from manga to novels is the descriptive language; I've been saving tons of phrases to my 'add to Anki' list while reading web novels.

I didn't know that many light novels and manga were originally web novels. I always thoughts web novel would become light novels and then manga while web manga just became printed and eventually anime (One Punch Man, looking at you! Wink ). I know you stated that you are reading 蜘蛛ですが、何か? right now. Did it help that you read the manga adaptation first?

I wouldn't say 'many', but I've been seeing a surprising number of manga that were originally web novels (盾の勇者の成り上がり, the aforementioned 蜘蛛ですが、何か?, and at least one other that I'm too lazy to remind myself of at the moment). Some of those also have LN adaptions. I haven't been specifically going after these titles, so I assume there's plenty more.

But yes, reading the manga first definitely helped. For one,it made it easier to get past the first chapter. It also gave me a general understanding of what was going on, which made the transition to text-only easier.
One thing to look out for is the heavy editing between formats (goes for regular LN to manga adaptations too); whole events and their order can be messed with to compress the story in the manga. This is most often because the manga is nothing more than an advertisement for the novel.

I could go on about the weird practices of the industry, but I'm typing on my phone...

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-05-30

I'm in. I have set a modest 800-page goal as I have a lot of other things going on at the mome (a lot of which, luckily, involve speaking Japanese).

I did the same last time for similar reasons, but still managed to reach my "secret goal" of 1,000 so I am secretly hoping again.

I am a very bad tadoku-ist as I illegally look up words like crazy. I just can't bear to let an unknown word go by.

However, since this slows me down rather than speeds me up, I don't feel I am cheating in the contest!

Actually tadoku turns out to be my biggest source of new words.

Sorry to be so perverse(*゚ー゚)ゞ

I really am sorry as I am not one of those people who thinks it is funny to be perverse. On the other hand I do believe in doing what works best in the individual case and this seems to work for me.

However I do want to get my reading speed up this time (it is painfully slow even in English), as I am thinking a faster intake will help with general on-the-fly understanding.

Everything you just said is pure gold!  Don't change for anyone or anything!╭( ・ㅂ・)و ̑̑ ˂ᵒ͜͡ᵏᵎ⁾✩

I actually do not look up words during my initial reading but later on my second/third/etc. readings.

Aww damn, I just realized you can submit re-readings (*〇□〇)……!

readmod Wrote:b. Submitting pages you re-read (repeats)
If you have previously something before but would still like to read it for the contest you must tell the bot how many times you have read the text. You receive half as many points for each read. So if this is your second time reading a book you would use the #second tag. Third time? #third etc (note: the repeats only go to #fifth) Example:
“@TadokuBot 80 #book #third”

sigh, well I at least found a way to increase my page amount with little effort. This is I guess a good thing due to my slow reading skills. 皆さん、頑張って!I know I will need it when I hit my second manga series, Baby Steps with all that tennis terminology!
!(;゚o゚)o/ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄~ >゚))))彡

(gomen, I got excited to use Japanese emoji when I saw Curedolly do it)

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - RawrPk - 2016-06-01

Oh yeah! Day 1 started. I didn't meet my plan of finishing vol 1 of shirokuma, but I can use the page count. I'm aiming to finish vol 2 by the end of the first week. Btw, my twitter is @ccrawrlol

How is everyone else doing so far? I'm ranked 17.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - yukamina - 2016-06-01

It's noon here, but I can't start any reading until after work ^^; I'm contemplating rereading some things (consolidating some vocab from recent reading), but if it only counts for half, maybe it would be better not to?

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - RawrPk - 2016-06-01

Half is better than none I say. But I think if you have a chance to read new material, then probably prioritize that. Perhaps reread material for a few reasons: 1) you have no new material to read 2) when you want a break from your new material but still want quick ppp

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-06-01

Nothing yet. Too many other things happening to get to any reading done, and now I have to go out to attend to some things
(´;︵;`)

Personally I try to leave any re-reading to outside of the contest. I do like reading my favorite books more than once but I concentrate on new material when the contest is on. Not that I've concentrated on much yet!

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - Aikynaro - 2016-06-02

I've been reading a great deal anyway recently, so have jumped on board. Unusually, most of my page count is manga at the moment - I'm halfway through a long and quite enjoyable series, so that will probably last a little while. Also just started a new novel and it's very smooth reading so far, so should be good.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - yukamina - 2016-06-03

Wow, some people can really read a ton in a short span of time :O Lots of competition this round.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-06-03

Sou desu ne!

I couldn't do that in English(*゚ロ゚)

My kouhai is beating me right now too. Tough time to be a doll.

Still, it's all part of the fun, ne.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - gaiaslastlaugh - 2016-06-05

Are after the fact sign ups allowed? I didn't sign up for this earlier because I "read too slow". Having just blown through four volumes of a manga and about 25% of 俺たち花のバブル組 in the past two days or so, I'm starting to regret that life choice. Undecided
