RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - sholum - 2016-02-01

I read a lot this time! I don't mind the manga score, not only because it's been calculated, but because I tend to read text heavy manga (which I don't think were the intended type, based on what's popular).

Anyway, I got over 600 pages this time, which was far higher than my modest goal which I usually struggle to reach (mostly because I don't have much time). It was nice to see that, if I have the time, I'm able to read quite a bit.

Didn't read hardly anything considered a 'book' though... I had been reading a lot from a web novel before the contest, but I only read a tiny bit during January.

And I was happy to see so many people participating this time! There were over fifty people with at least a few points on the board, when some previous rounds have only had right around thirty.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - RawrPk - 2016-02-01

Though I didn't meet my tadoku goal, I still consider this a great round for me! I'm about halfway through the first manga I'm reading in Japanese.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - Ash_S - 2016-02-01

So I enjoyed my first Tadoku. I achieved my goal of reading more everyday than I normally do.
In particular, I read lots more fiction during the contest which was fun.
I did just do some reading now the round has finished and was surprised to find myself feeling relieved: I don't have to count pages and go to the site and input them anymore; reading is purely for fun now. It didn't feel particularly mendokusai during the contest but yeah, I was surprised to feel more relaxed reading now its over and I don't have the contest in the back of my mind.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-02-01

Enjoying normal reading too, though I kind of miss the excitement of the contest. I am taking the opportunity to re-read a couple of novels before giving them to a friend. I didn't do it during the contest because previously-read material only counts at half-value.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - kendo99 - 2016-02-01

Glad everyone had such a good run! I've been doing the contest since the beginning, with a long break of 3 years while I pursued something career related. I've done a few since returning to Japanese studies, but this time tried for a different approach. Instead of pushing myself for as many pages as I possibly could with whatever materials I happened to have at hand, I used it as a chance to build up my overall reading stamina and read material which was comprehensible without needing too much dictionary help, ala krashen and sakai sensei. My goal now is to maintain something like this pace going forward. The friendly competition and logging those pages daily was just the motivation I needed to make this push.

I had a business trip the last 8 days or so of the competition, so my page count fell dramatically, but I picked right back up today and found it was an easy thing to quickly knock out the chapter a day goal I worked up to during the contest.

My page count was less than a third of what it's been in some previous contests, but this time around I had no burn out and instead felt an eagerness to keep reading. Will keep this up until the March short contest, and then hopefully I'll be ready to crush it. Or maybe I'll go for a maintainable bump again, we'll see!

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - ikore - 2016-02-02

I'm happy with my results too. I managed to read over a 1000 book pages, making it count for 60% of my total score. In my previous rounds manga were always the biggest chunk. I've built a daily habit of reading at least something everyday, 3-5 pages of a novel on bad days to 100+ on good days. I finished four light novels during the contest and got started on two others.

I did win this time but I don't really feel like I did. The competition this round was pretty weak as the main contenders didn't participate this time.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-02-02

I think each round is what it is, and you won this one fair and square!

I know what you mean. I don't suppose I will reach the top three again even if I increase the amount I read. The first contest I took part in (last June) had much stiffer competition. I don't think I would have time to read as much as the stronger contenders. I am a notoriously slow reader even in English.

But it was fun to get the opportunity to do so well. And of course one's personal goal is what really matters.

(Edit: Oops sorry I was only in the top three for Japanese (which is what I was mostly looking at). No. 4 in the overall ranking)

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - pm215 - 2016-02-02

Just out of curiosity, about how many hours a day are you all reading for? My Japanese speed isn't great, but I feel like not spending enough time reading is what's really keeping my overall page rate per month down...

I just try to read something every day. If I only have five minutes, so be it. If I have more time I try to aim for around an hour. On days that I really feel like reading I could be reading for hours on end.

Maybe a couple of hours when I do read, but then, it also depends on what I'm reading, and I also tend to get distracted every few minutes, so I'm not really sure.
I did think about timing myself once I start reading more books or text only things (probably would be good for JLPT prep); manga's word density is just too variable (even within the same series) to make an accurate judgement from it.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - yukamina - 2016-02-03

When I actually sit down to read, I read for an hour to an hour and a half. If I'm reading manga, I usually just read until I finish the volume if it's really good.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - pm215 - 2016-02-03

I mostly read in bed so some nights I'm just too tired to read anything, a good night might be 30 or 45 minutes, and occasionally longer if the book is good. I think I manage about 20 pages an hour if I remember the figure right from last time I checked.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - kendo99 - 2016-02-03

I'm reading about 30 minutes a day from books, but I read japanese tweets and other stuff like that all throughout my day. When I was playing 時計仕掛けのレイライン I was racing home from work and reading for hours and hours for several weeks straight (this was a few months ago) but I was using ITH and the dictionary capabilities from TA, which made it kind of too easy. Also, I eventually kind of burned out on it, thus my different strat for this last tadoku round.

It varies for me. At time I can' bring myself to read for more than 5 minutes but also there were moments where I read for over an hour! I'm trying to get into the habit of daily reading so I might just time myself to do 20 minutes of reading a day. Back in middle and high school, we had a small time of the day called "SSR: Silent Sustained Reading". I know it works because I managed to finish a few novels in English back in those days when I wouldn't have otherwise.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - Wurstmann - 2016-02-06

I read every night from 12 to 1. It's a habit just like doing Anki every day. Depending on the difficulty of what I'm reading the page count varies.
Other than that I read some things online.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - RawrPk - 2016-03-09

Mini round is coming up everyone! (Round 1.5: March 15th - 31st). I just registered. Thought I'd let you guys know Big Grin

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - kendo99 - 2016-03-09

Get HYPE, itttttttttttttttttttttttt's tadoku time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - SomeCallMeChris - 2016-03-10

Hnnh. I just now posted in another topic,

Quote:I would've placed pretty high (not top 3, but probably top 5 definitely top 10) in the last tadoku (that i was thinking about registering for although I never did. I kinda kept an eye on the numbers though.) ... but... I dunno... I might read half that much in a different month and place way low, or read twice that much and place an easy first. Somehow I just don't want how much I read to have to depend on anything other than how much I feel like reading.

I like the idea of feeling involved with a reading community, but... meh. I dunno about this Tadoku thing. I'll certainly be reading, but I don't know if I'll be marking my results down.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - yukamina - 2016-03-10

A mini round? Is there a reason it's not a full month?

Initially, they were 3-4 times a year. Some of us wanted more frequent contests, because the contest's effect on our motivation to read was so powerful, but that kind of intensity is kind of hard to maintain for what would have amounted to six months out of the year so the mini-rounds were invented.

(Now if only I hadn't taken that huge break in Japanese study/tadoku between those early contests and now ...  Big Grin)

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - anotherjohn - 2016-03-10

I've got some time off next week so I finally made a twitter account and signed up for tadoku

Prepare to get pwned  Cool

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - yukamina - 2016-03-10

It's true that I fizzle out before the end of the month every time I do Tadoku... I signed up (username Anonamul)! I have some new books I'm excited to read too :3

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - CureDolly - 2016-03-15

Am joining this round, but am currently concentrating on listening, also I have other things on so may not be able to read too consistently. I will be going for a modest goal this time and won't be pwning anyone.

Not that I ever pwn anything anyway, beyond the odd family heirloom.

RE: 多読 Tadoku Reading Challenge - sholum - 2016-03-15

I completely forgot about the half round!
I'm joining, but I doubt much will happen; focused on output recently, and have been getting a lot of work recently (yay!), so there's not as much time for reading.
