Using WordPress to Archive One's Studying - TheVinster - 2013-03-25

I made a WordPress just now with the thought that perhaps I can use it to keep track of my studying. Maybe do a daily post about the news articles or amount of pages I read in a current novel. I could post when I finish a book. Stuff like that. I'm looking for ideas on the best way to throw this info together, and hopefully as I look back at what I've done I'll be able to fully understand my gains in learning. What do you guys think?

And actually I was considering splitting it into 2 blogs. One of them could be straight-up archiving (ex: read these articles, completed 10 pages of this book, watched this show) while the other could be actual blogging regarding my opinions and views on said content. As far as archiving in general goes is there any good way to go about it that keeps track of accumulated info? Say I add that I read 10 pages, then that number would be calculated into a cumulative number of 4,000 pages for example.

well just don't get carried away with writing your thoughts about it since that's time that's being taken away from doing something in japanese.

personally, i just keep track of what i watch NOT because i want to calculate hours or whatever but so i can watch eps i didn't see as opposed seeing someting again and wonering whether i saw it or not.

That's why my idea of archiving things was going to be very minimalistic. The bloggier side of it was more of an afterthought that I probably won't follow-up on. Frankly I find it hard enough to blog in English, much less Japanese.

I suppose then the question is whether or not it's worth going to the trouble to have an "at a glance" of my Japanese studying. Or should I just do my daily archiving of "11 pages today, and the following articles..." and leave it at that?

Yeah minimalist is the best. Like For the pages you mentioned I would just record the date You finished reading the book bc keeping track of it is going to get annoying. It also depends how much you want to keep track of it. i personally have no desire other than for practical reasons. For Japanese articles links are gonna die, I might start skimming or scrolling a lot or close the tab mid sentence for whatever reason. It's just burdensome if I knew I want to record what I did and I'd feel pressure to finish reading even if the article is bleh. I would just keep it as minimal as possible, estimate if need be if u wanna keep track. I use dokusho meter for the books.

You could always to a diary entry type thing, as in ink and paper. At the end of the day, or week, or whenever you feel like it, write a little something in relation to your studies you think is something you'd like to look back on one day.

There isn't really a "best", and I've no idea why anyone would suggest it. It is your blog and you should have a better idea of how you like to record your memories/activities better than anyone else. If you don't want to write a lot then don't, if you want to write a longer post, then do.

There's always simple time-line approaches if you don't really like blogging. Something like a graph with days and numbers, with a few different coloured points representing different things relevant to your interests (vocab, books read, sentences minded, manga bought, ponies juggled- whatever you want to record) and just put a dot on the relevant number on the day you reached whatever it is you reached, and watch the lines slowly climb.

Or maybe you'd prefer to do a short recording at the end of the day/week/month, whatever, of yourself saying something like "today on the X/X/X I [something you think is interesting relating to your studies]", or whatever you want to record.

Really, there are heaps of ways to record progress, and it is your progress, which begs the question: who would you be writing the blog for, yourself or others?

Add basic feedback--review quantity & quality

@howtosavealif3 congrats on reaching that post count

I just use excel to keep track. There are also numerous programs specialized in helping you track your studies.
While I post about my progress on wordpress, it's not really reaping any benefit.
As for the blog about the contents, it's your choice really. For most content there are already reviews on the Internet though, and it wouldn't do anything for your Japanese or keeping track or anything. You could however write it in Japanese. Or just go directly to lang-8 and write your opinion about what you've read there. I can never get into as much detail on lang-8 as I would if I were writing a review in English though (partially because I'm not that good at Japanese, partially because I always feel bad having strangers waste their time with my long posts).

Oh, and there's always book meter for books, myanimelist for mangas, not much for news, and Tadoku for certain months.

Thanks guys. Uisukii, the kind of advice I was seeking was more along the guidelines of how to make a good archive of studied information or blog. Sure there's no one good way, but one can follow advice to help organize the information or display it in a more understandable manner.

Howtwosavealif3, yep I use dokusho too. Regardless I was still curious if I would be able to find a good method to record the info myself.

Zgarbas how do you display your info in Excel? Perhaps that may be a better idea. I did use lang-8 for a good week up until my finals last week, but then I just stopped. I don't know what it is but I have a hard time committing myself to lang-8. The community seems quite good and yet I hesitate when considering putting a post up there. That most likely goes back to my inability to write a good blog.

I use Evernote for this purpose. The main reason I prefer it is because I can clip full web articles with a few clicks, store them forever, and then chop them up or annotate them as much as I want. It also keeps my desktop, laptop, and mobile in sync so it has the benefit of being roughly as accessible as Anki.

My original method was an actual physical notebook which is kind of cool only because I still have it. I wouldn't recommend it though because taking the time to write stuff down was a huge time sink and it was sort of a remnant of my experiments with Japanese class.

^I also used Evernote, but for some reason I never kept up with it. I'd clip things into it, never to be seen again.

I just measure the time I spent doing study activities. Here's a sample (this is the empty April sheet, set to be a bit in the future and with a few things done to show how the sheet changes once you start filling it). It can get confusing to look at when it's filled, but you get used to it. If it's content you want to track(what you watched, or what not), then you could just make a default list anywhere, really. Or keep a list of things right next to the study calendar or what not.

I also had trouble posting on Lang-8, mainly because I felt compelled to write about myself and what I do. Then I realized that is not necessary, and I can just write about anything I like. I post random bits of history and my thoughts on anime and literature now =). Soooo much better. It also sparks conversations, which is nice. Still need to post more often, though.

I've also wondered sometimes if WordPress could be used locally without any dependencies.

Googled up Instant WordPress. Anyone tried it?
