Every single time it starts to fade off into a bad memory, necromancers come to practice their black art...

Why such an uproar over the "perverted stories"?

There are only a few at the top of the list and they are not really all that perverted.

Frankly, I found the story about a bookshelf falling on a guy and his head exploding to be far more disturbing, than animal tracks and a shakuhachi. But, that's just me.

The thing is though, I will not forget the story with guys head exploding... EVER!!!

Like I'll never forget similar parts of Akira.... EVER!!!

And that's the real point isn't it; to never forget.

Quote:Anyway, the main benefit of this is the same as the current star functionality: users can convey their opinion on a story without hurting anyone's feelings, coming off as prude, etc.
The report system is more than enough. This, I think, is taking a step in a less productive direction.

Quote:To use your own analogy of television, what if every station (TechTV or whatever) always had one horribly depressing story on FIRST whenever you changed the channel, and then you could enjoy the station?
There is always the option of changing the channel, is there not? TV is a horrible comparison I think, though, unless this is a public access channel where you can supply your own content we're speaking of. You can create your own stories.

Quote:Er, are there any kids? Some sixteen and seven year olds, but I doubt there's much they haven't imagined already...
Children, today, are not as innocent as people make believe they are. Seriously. I knew more about certain topics by the time I was ten than the older generations learned by college (mostly from FOX and the Discovery Channel). And you know, I'm less messed up and have a cooler head about these topics than most.

Quote:If a story is "sensible" and "safe," it will have much less of an imprint on your brain
It has about as much imprint as a random thought. Rather than scour the site for watered down stories your time would be better spent simply searching for a site with catchy mnemonics and SRSing those, or making up your own.

In the end, I strongly feel that it doesn't matter how you remember the story as long as you remember it. If someone remembers the Kanji using lewd stories, so be it. Maybe there should be an 'explicit' option so that people can choose whether they want the stories censored or not.

Although I don't like them, lewd stories are unfortunately quite effective. However, as we've said before, I think there should be an option for whether a story is visible or not. I.e., it relies on people self-censoring, i.e., a per-story "my story might upset some people" option, as well as a user's global "I don't mind seeing censored stories" option.

This.

Not everyone learns in the same way. I personally like to have funny stories, some like stories that relate to them, some just like really cruel images. Everyone's different.

I love perverted stories. The ones I create are crude, insensitive, filthy, disgusting, etc. Feminists would hate me. But they help me remember and they make learning so much more fun.

This is a harmless use of my private mind. Go to whatever corner of yours that you want to. No one has to see the stories except you.

It would be fun to see what other people's imaginations come up with, though.

We'll see if you still love them in 2000 characters...
But if you feel like sharing, you should, no one's gonna sue you you know...

I would prefer not to know the meaning of kanji if an unpleasant story popped up in my mind every time I saw one.

the story will be in your long-term memory for years to come

I finished all 2,042 and still enjoy sexual mnemonics, but not that many of the characters lend themselves to one. Maybe I should go over them again.

As for posting the lewd ones, this is a public square, where vulgar language and ideas are not expected to be found, so I will not post them, in exchange for not being thought of as an 8th grader. Respect works both directions.

For me, sexual and unpleasant are unrelated. Violence either; that's why I was happily shooting some heads and severing arms a few days ago (in a videogame.)

anyone else sick of perverted stories? - bodhisamaya - 2011-08-19

Perhaps unpleasant was a poor choice for an adjective. Sex is a wonderful thing, but like many things enjoyable, too much of a good thing usually turns unpleasant. I would highly recommend against using such memory cues except in rare cases where the connection would be immediately obvious to most.

I'm still struggling with boners when reading Japanese.
