Anyone using e.Typist 14.0 OCR software? - PotbellyPig - 2013-02-10

I've seen some posts here and across the net about the e.Typist OCR software and the fact that it is pretty good for scanning Japanese texts. I wanted to scan some learning materials and OCR them. Well, I downloaded the trial of e.Typist 14.0 but I have a problem: All the menu items and some text here and there are junk characters. I went ahead and changed the interface of Windows 7 to Japanese so that now all the interface items in all my other programs are in Japanese. I then uninstalled and re-installed e.Typist but I seem to be having the same problem. I'm probably missing a font somewhere. Anyone have any ideas?

I found out what the main issue was. It seems to use non-unicode fonts so I had to change the locale to Japan for non-unicode fonts. I probably didn't have to switch the UI at all. It does seem like a pretty nice program. I just took a few tries at it and it does seem to work well, even with some images that are not that good. They only give you 5 days for the trial and then you have to purchase it. It's about $100 for the Japanese/English edition and a bit more for the "all language" edition. If I like it, I'll have to see if there is a place that will allow me to purchase it from the USA.

Anyone else using this software?

It's non-unicode text not non-unicode fonts, but yes. This is also true for a lot of other Japanese made software.

Glad you figured it out.
