Words I can't read - yudantaiteki - 2013-02-19

I'm giving a presentation in a few weeks so today I had to read my 読み原稿 for practice; afterwards the professor pointed out some words I had read incorrectly. This really shows that the grade level of a kanji doesn't have much to do with how well you know it -- here's the list of words I messed up on, so you can all see how much better you are than me (some of these are from cited things, some are from sentences the professor suggested; I think except for the embarrassing 1st one I could read all the kanji from the parts I actually wrote myself.)

1854年
版木屋
先駆性
摂取 (I misread the second kanji here embarrassingly enough; I was probably thinking of 摂政 as I read it.)
上木 (meaning "to print a woodblock")
意図
踏襲
主として
分析
先人

Back to Japanese 101 for me! Smile

What are 版木屋 and 先駆性 supposed to be? (reading and meaning)

はんぎや (a woodblock printing company -- of course it's はんぎや but then 上木 is じょうぼく. I hate kanji Smile)
せんくせい (pioneering)

I couldn't agree more somedays.

I think as long as Japanese people continue to make mistakes with kanji readings we should be allowed to as well Wink

Hi YDTT, i feel equally embarrass or silly when i read it the wrong way too. Actually, the Aso (former Japanese PM) have problems with Kanji reading as well. Hopefully this makes you feel much better now. Smile

For example:
身体傷害 【からだしょうがい】
身体障害 【しんたいしょうがい】
Just 身体 is enough to drive almost anyone up the wall with the Kanji proper readings! (lol)

Only 丸暗記 works for me. Wink

I don't think 身体傷害 is read as からだしょうがい... they should be both be read the same. But the first one isn't really used.

i can read all of these perfectly... but my grasp of grammar is still shoddy. My biggest mistake was not studying grammar and overloading on kanji...

@yudantaiteki Dude, what you need is rikaichan for the speech. Big Grin

@HonyakuJoshua I hope you are studying grammar now.

Wait, how did you read 1854年?

意図 and 分析 are the only other ones that I would be a bit embarassed by since I see those words a lot.

I said よんねん instead of よねん. I've taught that in class before so I'm ashamed that I messed it up...but it's not the kind of thing you really notice, I guess.

身体傷害
読み方:からだしょうがい
http://ejje.weblio.jp/content/%E8%BA%AB%E4%BD%93%E5%82%B7%E5%AE%B3

例文:
怪我または身体傷害を引き起こす
cause injuries or bodily harm to

I think in the grammar sense, it should be written as 身体を傷害... However in speech form, を is often "unspoken" (or left-out) most of the time. The distinction between personal injury [からだしょうがい] and (physical) handicap [しんたいしょうがい] is used in the insurance industry.

Another example like 私立と市立, both are read as しりつ, but when there is a need to distinguish them... 「市立」 is read/spoken as 「いちりつ」, especially over the phone calls.
