JDrama Drinking Game - TheVinster - 2013-01-31

I really love me some JDramas, but I'll be honest that even some of the ones I like get on my nerves. I'd like to know what some of your guys' pet peeves are for JDramas or, really, any Japanese media. There's lots of crossover in annoying things they do.

Drink when:

・Someone's stomach rumbles loudly, triggering a segue to the next scene.
・One character is emotionally moved by another character's words, and just repeats their name. 「田中さん・・・」
・Awkward closed-mouth kissing for an incredibly long time.
・Character is walking away from another and stops in their tracks. They continue the conversation with their back turned to the person they're speaking to.

I'll surely be able to come up with more when I watch some tomorrow.

Mine are when:
・A way-nicer-but-forever-doomed secondary guy character does something that yet again shows that he's better for the main girl character &
・Protagonist runs somewhere dramatically instead of taking a vehicle, despite having a car/driver/taxi access

I could probably think up some more also, *sigh*

A kind of corollary ...

・When you see a character run from location A to B in the same scene, but you know those locations are actually a good 5+ minutes apart.

JDrama Drinking Game - TheVinster - 2013-01-31

・When two characters in the story, despite the size of Tokyo or ANY CITY FOR THAT MATTER, accidentally bump into each other on the street. Drink twice if one of the characters is sitting in a bench staring at a personal item prominent to themselves and the current story arc.

Some rules if you want to add the risk of alcohol poisoning

- Drink everytime a character smokes a cigerette.
- The camera does a reaction shot of all people in the room.

JDrama Drinking Game - Minki - 2013-05-31

^ If you really want to get alcohol poisoning fast, you only have to use Nukemarine's second pet-peeve during an Indian drama. It's terrible. 5 minutes of reaction shots for every little thing that happens and there are always at least 6 people in one room at any given time.

And they like to make full use of special effects too (black and white, camera moves up, down, left, right, backwards, upside down, flashing disco screen, zoominoutinoutreallyfast, zoom in super slow to the eyes...). Do the math Wink

Success guaranteed every single time Big Grin.

Anyway...

- Main character is looking for someone in a crowd. They walk past eachother (the MC only has to look right/left and they'd see the other person) and the scene goes into slowmotion just as they miss eachother.

- One of the characters trips and oops, they fall on top of someone and their lips touch. According to the laws of dramaland, they must now become girlfriend and boyfriend.

- When some real emergency happens, people like to pretend there's no such thing as an emergency line.

Japanese tv in general:

- Drink everytime you see food onscreen.
- Drink when it's accompanied by the squeals of (B-list??)celebrities going:
うああああああ おいしいいいいいいいいいいいいいいいいいいいい。

omg I wrote about this in lang-8
stuff i mentioned include

- 2 characters talking about serious topic and they keep talking to each other standing with this awkwardly long distance between them and the body language/posture adds to the awkwardness. you know what i'm talking about? it's just so damn unnatural. I refuse to believe japanese poeple have serious conversations like that! I just hate the unnaturalness in j-dramas.

- usually the serious scene has to do with confession and i hate how every confession scene is dragged out. I undersatnd it's nerve-wrecking but it's too much with the hesitation or stuttering or whatever. they'll say i i i i i (boku/watashi/ore). ___ no koto ga gaga gagaga s s s s s
it's like omg anyone can figure out what the hell this person is trying to say just say yes or no!

- they use the same song/background music over and over. I understand that that is the theme song or backgrohd music but some dramas just over-use it to the point that i feel really pissed the last episode.

- like people said they just happen to meet each other. it's just good too damn convenient.

- way too much flashback scenes. Like for one drama something happened in the episode and then 30 minutes later in that episode they used that scene for the flashback. of course I felt insulted! It just felt like they're only using the flashback scene to make it seem like those characters developed a deep relationship in that single episode or whatever but I don't buy it. It actually makes me think that their connection is if anything way less strong than the flashback scene usage is trying to make me believe. it's complete bullshit!

( I don't think it's that well-written it was 4 years ago but nonetheless i know what the hell i was trying to say)

Indeed, there is often a soft piano version of the theme for background music. The song from the Honey and Clover anime will never exist my head because of this wandering piano revisiting the punky theme ad nauseam.

Also, I guess you can straight binge drink if a whole episode is a compilation of flashbacks, revisiting how the plot developed for the whole season, like the last episode of Liar Game season one.

Take a shot when one of the characters suddenly has to go abroad. Take three shots when their love interest runs manically to the airport in a last minute attempt to convey their feelings.

Ahahaha, oh man. Is it illegal to show people making out on Japanese television or something?

Just wanted to share how you say pause too much in japanese. you know how in dramas they say a word or two and pause for dramatic effect or whatever and then finish what they're saying or pause even more.... before I was trying to describe it in jpanaese on my lang-8 as togireru or soemthing but later I found out how you describe that in japanese when i was watching god tongue I believe. the verb you use to describe that is tameru as in tamesugi dayo!
