1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - thurd - 2013-01-13

Original 1M Challenge - NHK News Easy is slowly reaching the finish line, so its time to prepare for another one. In this edition there will be more time to sign up (5 days) and the level will have something for both beginners and intermediate learners.

I'll also start numbering these challenges since there might be enough interest to make it a recurring thing.

I see there is a problem with weekends & holidays where there are no new articles, my solution is to use these packed articles from almost a year ago. These are only Easy versions but for Full you can just read a regular NHK article you didn't read before.

The new spreadsheet is HERE and you can start signing up. If you run out of space for your name in formatted area and you don't know how to adjust it, just add it on the next row and somebody will correct it at some point.

--

Rules: Read & listen to NHK News Easy and corresponding NHK News article (there is a link above the picture in every Easy article) every day (6 articles each day) for a month. Whatever form and combination works for you its fine (I do: listen, read, listen+read), using Rikai* is fine.

Participants: Beginner and Intermediate. If you find Full articles too hard even after reading the Easy version, you can just focus on Easy. If you find Easy a little too easy, focus on Full.

Goal: Help with transition from beginner to intermediate and motivate yourself to read regularly.

How: I've created a spreadsheet to help everyone track their progress, its available here. Just add your nick in an empty row. Pick 'O' from the drop-down if you've read that set of articles for that day or 'X' if not.

When: We start Friday 18th of January and end on 18th of February.

Thank you for the work. I'm in.

I want to use this to develop a habit of reading using peer accountability but the NHK Easy articles are below my level. For the previous challenge, essentially what I'd been doing is reading the full articles but with this challenge, you've included the easy and full ones. Is it alright If I participate in this and just read the full articles?

Sure, its no problem. This time I wanted to create a template spreadsheet that can be used in future editions and supports both levels of articles. Thanks to this approach depending on your current level and learning speed you could for example only read Easy for 2 editions, then both for the third one and finally read only Full news when you get comfortable. In your case you're already there Smile

Nice, that's exactly what I need to bring myself to read more.
I didn't participate in the first challenge so my reading is probably not good enough to read the full articles, therefore I'll just go with the easy ones. I'm in Smile

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - Rael89 - 2013-01-14

Signed up. Hopefully the addition of full articles on the regular days will help keep me motivated to participate during the days when the Easy articles aren't published.

In the previous contest we could go back and read more articles to make up for days we missed. I never did this because I felt like it was against the spirit- which is to read/listen every day. Any thoughts on changing this? (That is, if you don't read for a day, no credit for that day)

Its hard to judge this either way, I agree its sort of "against the spirit" and takes away a lot of competitiveness but on the other hand its awesome that people read in large quantities and I'd like to encourage them to read as much as possible.

I don't want to be too strict with the rules (hidden authority issues?) so I'd opt for everyone finding their own way. Maybe color code your nick to indicate what 'type' are you? First person who does this can create a legend beneath explaining the color and what it means.

Personally I knew there would be days I'd be "unavailable" so at first I wanted to make up for them but later decided against it, I want to see how diligent I am at this.

This is a great idea! I'll stick to the Easy news for now, but I'm definitely in.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - Oniichan - 2013-01-17

Well, no update for the 18th yet, maybe it's a slow news day. I read the articles for the 17th instead.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - Rael89 - 2013-01-17

No they never update it this early. If you note the times previous articles were added they're usually put up in the afternoon between 2 and 5pm Japan time. Trust me, I'm a fiend.

See you guys tomorrow when we all level up the next stage!

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - Jombo - 2013-01-18

Joining this. I actually did get into the habit of reading NHK almost everyday from the last one, I was just never bothered to update.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - mustermann - 2013-01-18

Nice idea. Hope that makes me read more. I am in and just read the first article \(^o^)/

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - hirata - 2013-01-18

I just had my first taste of 'Normal' NHK News. It's definitely a step up from the Easy articles. Whereas the Easy articles are dwindling in the amount of new vocabulary, the 'Normal' versions of the same articles have me adding several new words per article (and even a bit of new grammar).

Hopefully, like the Easy articles, the Normal articles will quickly become easier to handle.

Let's do our best, everyone.

hirata Wrote:Hopefully, like the Easy articles, the Normal articles will quickly become easier to handle.
Maybe not as quickly as the Easy articles, but the Normal articles will become easier to handle. When you read similar articles on weather, homicides, and major incidents, certain phrases and words reoccur a lot and you'll get used to them.

Has anybody checked out the old Easy articles from the archive yet? It seems the TTS used to speak a lot faster. I kinda wish it was still like that today.

Yes, they are much faster and also sound very unnatural, technology moves forward I suppose. Treat it as additional challenge Smile

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - Rael89 - 2013-01-21

Phew. Keeping up with these main site articles is tough work. Too many new words for each article compared to the easy versions. Hopefully they will start to get easier and this time next month I can fully rid myself of the training wheels and be a big boy in the next challenge.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - Melamelachan - 2013-01-22

Today's article (and video!) about the "Penguin Cam" totally made my day Smile

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - mekkanare - 2013-01-23

The article regarding Obama was the most challenging one of yesterday's group to get through. I swear every word in the full version was a new one for myself.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - RawrPk - 2013-01-31

Sigh I haven't been caught up with the readings at all (except today's articles). -_-

My solution to avoid not reading NHK Easy articles? Make the site my homepage so it will be the first thing I see whenever I use my browser (I use both chrome and firefox so I prepped both just in case). If there are those who are also participating in this challenge and lacking in motivation/time/etc, I believe doing this will help.

頑張って!

So one more day left. How's everyone doing?

I've missed a couple days so I haven't completely made my goal, but my consistency has improved quite a bit compared to the round we did last month so I will call this a success.

I'm exactly the opposite Smile Life got in the way and now its really hard for me to find some consistency.

Will have to try harder in the next round.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - UltraRunAllDay - 2013-02-17

seems legit. Approved.

I better get it in next round.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1 - hirata - 2013-02-17

I'm pleased with myself for keeping up. Among other things, it's also made TV news easier to listen to (both seem to use similar language after all).

I'll be in for the next round as well, while getting ready for the March round of Tadoku.
