Japanese typing tutor software - gombost - 2012-11-21

Hi!

I'm searching for a (preferably Linux) typing tutor software for Japanese keyboard layout. A long time ago I used Klavaro to learn touch typing on a normal keyboard but it doesn't seem to have Japanese support.

Any ideas? Smile

Are you saying that you want to learn kana-entry? Because the Japanese layout is the standard QWERTY plus different punctuation locations here and there and maybe 2 extra keys. It's not really something you'd need to a program for.

Nobody uses Kana entry, romaji is the standard method in Japan.

I saw a video on YouTube the other day where a guy was typing with kana input and it looked super fast. I would have asked him about it but I deleted my account when they made compulsory to have a Google+ account for YT commenting.
It's not that I'm dissatisfied with romaji input but it would be nice to have this skill because I like typing in general Smile

Not Linux, but Gainax put out a series of typing games a while back. Eva, Mahoromatic, & Gunbuster typing. You can switch them all to Japanese keyboard layout. For the most part they are all in kana, I found them quite enjoyable back in the day for standard romaji typing and drilling those kana's into my head with speed.

Kana input is nice when you don't have to use dakuten (etc.) or when you don't want tyo use small や-line characters like ょ, ゅ, etc. which requires three quite uncomfortable keystrokes.

One thing you could do though, is to just start typing in kana-input and keep improving - it'll only take a couple of days to learn where all the characets are. The only annoying character on romaji input is the ん in the middle of words, whereas kana-input has a lot of other annoyances to deal with.
