Agreed. My reading comprehension and vocabulary are climbing fast thanks to this challenge. I'm excited to see where I end up after this event is over (and everybody else's results as well!).

There is a small Weather&News section from CosCom...
Thank you for these links.

Unfortunately, the NHK Easy is still so far above my level that I'm thinking it's a really inefficient use of my time. Having only recently finished RtK 1, I'm enjoying the challenge and having my first taste of recognising keywords and figuring out what the meaning of the kanji might be, but it's taking me hours. I started off trying to read the three articles, then just three paragraphs, and now just the three headlines. (And it still takes me a ridiculoulsy long time!) On the days when there hasn't been NHK Easy stories, I've started reading a book, a "Pre-Intermediate Japanese Reader". That is also really difficult, so I guess I'm still more of a Beginner than even Pre-Intermediate... Sad

I'm going to try the links RawrPk quoted above and keep myself accountable on the spreadsheet. Smile

New Year is upon us so time for a little update.

Tadoku is back and I encourage everyone doing 1M Challenge to join Tadoku as well, you can count each article as 1 page of news which by the end of the month should add to an even 90 pages. If you read the stories twice like I do (w/o and with audio) you can count the second pass for half the points.

We're half way through our challenge and already we see some great performances: apirx and devvar are flawless so far but they could be matched by a few others (aniumixie, hirata, qwarten) assuming they just forgot/didn't update their progress yet. There are of course many others going very strong with only 1 or 2 slip ups, still very admirable. Remember its the effort that counts!! Smile

Oh and Scarby Dancer, hang in there. It's though at first but I promise you it'll get easier over time. By the end of third challenge you'll be amazed by your progress and how much faster your reading is, even if you stick to just the easy ones.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - randyrandy - 2013-01-01

Hey guys, I've been reading these articles for a few months now. I haven't found this thread but I will be participating now! Big Grin The NHK Easy articles are really great imo.

I'm still here! It's been a slow day for me after staying up too late playing PSO2 (in Japanese of course!).

Thank you for the heads up on 多読! I was under the impression that it was for people who were only reading novels. I've registered and updated my reading count for the day (both there and on the 1M challenge spreadsheet).

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - RawrPk - 2013-01-02

Sigh I haven't been caught up with all the articles (or updating on which I actually read). But that changes now!

It's the new year, 多読 is back and I'm participating in it for the first time! I'm mainly reading manga atm but the news articles will be better for my ppp score (manga is only 0.2 ppp). I set a modest goal so if I read all the articles + manga, I'll make my goal easy!

No point of being pessimistic. Just move on and keep on learning Smile

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - captal - 2013-01-02

Thanks for pointing out the 多読 contest- I'll update there as well.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - thurd - 2013-01-10

Hi, time for another update.

We're on the last stretch, its less than a week now and we can declare our winner/s. The prize of course is the learning/reading itself Smile

But just as this challenge comes to an end I want to announce another (I'll create a separate thread for that later) that will build upon this one. Everyone is invited but level will be a bit higher than current one as we'll be reading Easy & Source article. There will be a spreadsheet for that one too but it will be redesigned a bit to accommodate more users (I never thought so many people would sign up).

On an unrelated note there was a nice paragraph yesterday that shows how all knowledge comes together when reading.

アメリカのボストンの空港で、8日、成田空港へ出発するために滑走路へ行く途中の日本航空のボーイング787から燃料が漏れているのが見つかりました。空港によると、約150Lの燃料が漏れていました。

The bolded word was unknown to me but considering context and kanji used I didn't have any doubt about what it means.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - Inny Jan - 2013-01-10

Thanks thurd for that passage. I already knew that 漏れる can be used with 放射能 but in your passage it's used with 燃料 – noted.

In return, here is one of the lines from CosCom's reports on 東北地震:
政府によると、漏れた放射能は人体に影響がない程度だそうです。本当でしょうか。

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - radical_tyro - 2013-01-11

i just watched the video for the "福男選び" article. it looked like those guys were running for their lives and a number of them took a good faceplant at the end. wow... O_O

wait, now i noticed at least one person getting trampled at the start. there must be more than just good luck and sacred sake for the winners...?

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - Nukemarine - 2013-01-11

Just read this thread. What a nice idea.

Perhaps give an option to color code your name to show what level of the challenge you're doing: Green - NHK Easy, Yellow - NHK Easy plus 1 accompanying article, Red - All accompanying articles.

I know I've been out of the studying game for over two years (aside from a brief study binge last summer), but I have the bug again to get back to it. Great to see the forums keeping a good community together.

That's the idea but in your suggestion it makes it impossible to distinguish individual days where you did Easy but not Full. I've modified the spreadsheet so each name corresponds to two rows, you just tick whatever you've done in each day (its even color coded now).

You can scratch that itch by participating in the next challenge Smile

Here's another article on the regular site that matches the audio exactly:

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20130114/k10014779681000.html

It's about how the sales (shipment?) of tablets are expected to exceed the sales of laptops.

Bonus word for extra comprehension: 端末(たんまつ). This is a word that generally refers to computers you hold in your hands, so like cell phones and tablets.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - DevvaR - 2013-01-16

Completed the last day just now. Just wanted to say, it was a great challenge and it's really helped establish a regular reading routine. I'm looking forward to the next challenge. Smile

Congratulations!!! Perfect record throughout the whole challenge Smile

I'm sure you'll be joined by few others and tomorrow I'll post some kind of summary & results.

Meanwhile I encourage everyone doing 1M Challenge - NHK News Easy (and everyone in general) to sign up and participate in 1M Challenge - NHK News Easy & NHK News #1.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - Mushi - 2013-01-16

I'm not really one for checking off dates on a spreadsheet, so I haven't been participating in the challenge, but I like this resource.

This must be like the first time ever, that I've been able to actually understand entire Japanese news articles. Usually I give up at around oh, the headline. Smile They keep the kanji to a minimum, and listening to that painfully slow accompanying audio is practically cheating. Thanks for suggesting this!

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - hirata - 2013-01-17

I'm finished as well. I'm glad I participated. I went from getting headaches reading half an article, to easily handling three articles a day.

Though I'm more of a 'sentence guy', I used Rikaisama to keep an Anki deck for this challenge, just to memorize word readings. I ended up with 803 words from this challenge, so I guess it was pretty good for my vocab too (Haven't started Core6k yet, but plan to soon).

Thank you for doing this, thurd. I will try my hardest in the next challenge as well.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - Rael89 - 2013-01-17

yay! We made it!

I'm looking forward to starting the whole thing over again tomorrow in the next challenge. Hopefully to better results.

1M Challenge - NHK News Easy - thurd - 2013-01-18

I think most of our participants already updated their progress and its appropriate to officially end our competition.

Congratulations to everyone!!! I hope you enjoyed the challenge and improved your skills.

Now, the results:

1st place with 32 consecutive days goes to (alphabetical order):

aniumixie
devvar
hirata
radical_tyro

2nd place with 31 days:

telepiel

3rd place with 29 days:

thurd

4th place with 26 days:

Scarby Dancer

Special "Flash in the pan" award goes to everyone who signed up but didn't log a single day Big Grin

Overall as a group (28 active challengers) we managed to log in 438 days that roughly equals 1314 articles read!! I look forward to annihilating those numbers in the next challenge.
