勿体ない - GreenDragon - 2012-11-06 Hi, just been thinking...kinda strange. I know what もったいない means, but when I look at the Kanji (been trying to learn Kanbun as of recently...), I don't. Any advice on how to get to possible meanings by looking at the graphic representation of the "word"? 勿体ない - Taishi - 2012-11-06 Sometimes the connection between the meaning of a word and the kanji making it up isn't very clear. I believe there is a reason why they use the characters they do. Maybe the meaning has changed with time, or maybe there is some other story behind it. Basically reading the 語源 of a word can probably help. I haven't been able to find anything online that has an explanation to more than a few words though. 勿体ない - battlehymnz - 2012-11-06 Although it's all in Japanese, here's a site on Japanese word etymology: http://gogen-allguide.com/ The entry on もったいない is as follows. I can't really make out much other than basic facts (such as 「勿体」 originally being written as 「物体」). Quote:もったいないは、和製漢語「勿体(もったい)」を「無し」で否定した語。 勿体ない - Sunspot - 2012-11-07 Kanji look great in italic, don't they. 勿体ない - GreenDragon - 2012-11-08 Thanks, everyone! Yeah, well, this clarifies it a bit... Haven't used 語源 yet. Those seem pretty interesting... |
