Galaxy S3/Android - KanjiMood - 2012-10-26

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on turning my new device into the ultimate Japanese learning tool.. I've set up AnkiDroid already of course!

Also some questions:

1. On my device the only Asian language I can select is Korean, no Chinese or Japanese. Is there a way to add Japanese easily as the system language?

2. I added Google Japanese Input app due to the above issue, is that OK to use? What keyboard styles are you most comfortable with?

Thanks for any tips/advice.

Looking forward to seeing the answers on this thread. I've already gotten rid of my S3, but I had a miserable time trying to get it to work with Japanese text, and never got a proper font installed, even when using CyanogenMod.

Wow, that sucks - I just got mine.. Did you try rooting it?

Theres a thread for this already Tongue

but once you get the fonts issue worked out

Droidwing + 7 notes mazec + epwing dictionary

handwriting app makes looking up unknown characters/words a breeze

If you can get it, ATOK for a keyboard is really nice. (1500yen, but I love it.) Has a bunch of free add-on dictionaries you can download once you buy it for things like seasonal greetings, etc. I don't know if it's still Japan-only or not. (It was when I got it.) But if you can get it, it's a nice keyboard.

I prefer EBPocket to Droidwing, but they're both excellent. Also, Vertical text viewer for 青空文庫 formatted books.

There are two programs called "Japanese Verbs." I like the one with the 習う、知る kanji on the icon as opposed to the one with the big に on the icon, mainly because it conjugates over more forms... should I need to conjugate something. (Not often.)

Also, I've mentioned it before: DoggCatcher. Great for downloading all kinds of podcasts. I use it to grab the NHK news in JP to listen to while making/eating breakfast. I also grab the JPod101 free podcasts with it, too. (And other stuff as well.)

Really, all I use are Anki, ATOK, EBPocket, and DoggCatcher. That's all I need.

Thanks rich_f, those are some nice suggestions!

Do all of those programs require fonts to be sorted out first?

midonnay: This thread is more for Galaxy S3 - if you have a suggestion regarding the font I'd be glad to hear it though. I tried a brief search on google but didn't turn up much other than rooting the device. Probably better to ask if anyone has it done here first before I go to android specific forum..

I'm using a Galaxy Nexus, and I'm still stuck with the crap font that comes with Android, but in AnkiDroid, you can assign a custom font. It's a bit of work, and a bit of a pain, but it does work. Same goes for Vertical Text Viewer. It has custom font capabilities, insofar as using the different fonts that come with it to read text.

But I don't know of a way to fix it on the system level besides rooting it. Jelly Bean is supposed to have built-in Japanese support, with better fonts, but *only* if you select the system language as Japanese. :\

I'm surprised that not even replacing TouchWiz with Cyanogen would fix that. I guess the G3 CyanogenMod still has a ways to go.

What I'm interested in right now is the new Galaxy Note II. The international version looks awfully tempting. If it works on US TMO (AWS), then I might part with some money for it. Using the stylus for writing Kanji looks very appealing to me, and it would go one step further towards having a good electronic dictionary replacement. (I don't like to enter kanji in by drawing with my finger.)

Galaxy S3/Android - KanjiMood - 2012-10-27

I've been tracking down those apps.. I got the verbs and vertical viewer as they're free so far.

Did you get EBPocket Professional or free? And how about the dictionaries that go with it?

It seems like you can purchase ATOK internationally:

Also, where do you do download the add-on dictionaries?

Thanks!

Check this: Guide: Android: Japanese Environment on the go
A Galaxy SIII is not different from any other device.

Why pay for a Keyboard when you can get Jelly Bean Keyboard and download Japanese dictionary with it? You don't even have to learn to use the layout because it converts roumaji to Kanji/Kana.

CyanogenMod has proved to be the ultimate ROM regarding languages. It supports full Japanese system, not only fonts! What is a G3 CyanogenMod?

Galaxy S3/Android - KanjiMood - 2012-10-27

Sorry I should mention I'm rather new to Android in general, and the S3 is my first device. Also a lot of things regarding system language settings seem specific to specific versions of S3 devices from what I read.. If you can kindly suggest step by step process for fonts on S3 rather than generic, that would be awesome for any new guys.

Galaxy S3/Android - undead_saif - 2012-10-27

Then Google and Galaxy SIII forums are your best bet.
XDA is the most technical Android forum, check the threads there, make sure to search and read before asking, if there's an answer to you question, you'll probably find it there.

Of course rooting will most likely solve the problem.

Galaxy S3/Android - TwoMoreCharacters - 2012-10-27

Try MoreLocale2, it's an app that can change your system locale to a variety of different ones without needing root. I don't know how much will actually be translated though.

Does GS3 not have official Jelly Bean already? If not then all the more reason to recommend CM10 if you're fine with root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779578

I have it for my GS2 and the Japanese is perfect. Generally a great ROM as well. You might want to look up the basics of rooting first if you're new to it however.

Galaxy S3/Android - KanjiMood - 2012-10-27

I tried MoreLocale2, works perfect for system text - thank you! A lot of it seems to be in Japanese now (except some stuff like insert sim card). I haven't tried any specific apps or anything yet though.

Not sure about rooting because of the warranty.. does it screw up insurance as well?

Galaxy S3/Android - undead_saif - 2012-10-27

@KanjiMood If you're not sure about rooting, don't do it, at least for now, until you get bored with the device ^_^

Galaxy S3/Android - KanjiMood - 2012-10-27

Yeah that's what I thought Smile

I just bought some emulators.. that's all my Japanese gaming covered Smile I tested the Japanese version of Xenogears, good stuff!

Galaxy S3/Android - tashippy - 2012-11-09

Does anyone have a recommendation for a stylus to use with an android smart phone (specifically the HTC One S)? I see some available online, but they seem to have a rather thick nub for a tip. It doesn't seem like that would be ideal for using Mazec.

Galaxy S3/Android - henryw - 2012-11-09

On the Galaxy you shouldn't have to root for new fonts...unless your carrier has disabled side-loaded apps. If you don't know what that means go into Settings > Applications. Here there should (or I guess shouldn't if you can't install non-market apps) be a checkbox that says something like "Uknown sources." If that's checked download Fontomizer SP, an app allowing you to download new fonts. Apparently it only works for the Galaxy family of Samsung phones WITHOUT root, IF your carrier allows you to install non-market app. I'm on a Galaxy Precedent on cheapo Net10, but should work fine on a fancy S3.

There's only a few Nihongo fonts available on the app, but apparently you can send more to the developer and he will put them on there for you.

As for IME's I like either Simeji or Google's own Japanese IME.

Hope it works and enjoy!
