sholum, there's definitely a range in difficulty as far as the vocabulary goes used in these stories but the medium probably does skew towards simpler vocabulary, although many series are SF or Fantasy and will have story-specific words that are on the harder side. Glad you enjoyed it. Really looking forward to episode 6 of LAST desire (first link I posted), as episode 5 left off with one giant cliffhanger.

to Stansfield123: you're right about the sentence patterns, but more than the sentence patterns themselves (I'm finding j-subs really useful in learning to recognize them) I find difficult to understand the meaning of some words.
I had the same issue when I was learning english: I had no problem to read and understand text, but I was unable to catch even the simplest of spoken words. I, as CureDolly says in her blog, I solved this by listening while reading english subtitles.
What I find hard in Japanese is that some words are really similar, because there are less sounds, so it's hard to tell them apart.
But learning to recognize sentence patterns, as you said, helps enormously at this.
For example there is a song where they say:
……帆をあげろ
If one were unable to recognize te basic pattern obj + o + verb, he might misinterpret 帆を as 頬 (yes, I know it's most commonly read as ほほ, but just for the sake of this example)
This is a basic and stupid example I know ._. Another example could be いい and 言い, but obviously the way it's used and the context itself let you tell if it's the former or if it's the latter.
Those are easy examples and I'm not able to do more complex ones but I know there are, so what you said is really important!

Ok, now that I've finally found some listening material which I enjoy, and considering they are relatively long stories, I wonder how to study them. I was thinking about splitting them into separate sections of about 1 min. and study them one by one. I would study the first 1 minute of an audiobook, listening and reading it multiple times, and then trying to understand without reading but by listening only, multiple times, until I feel confident. And then go to the next 1 minute audio.
What would you do?
Yes, I'm considering adding them to Anki, sub2srs style, but only once I understand then quite well.

You can also use ballonguy's tool (aka Kage Shibari) along with making a sub2srs style anki deck. But this would only work if the text has time stamps like with a subtitle file.

Time stamping transcripts is easy enough with Aegisub subtitle editor/creator.
