anki color schemes

I know some of you use colors to make anki more pleasurable / less tiring to the eyes, so today I decided to do the same but I need some examples to take inspiration from Smile So what's your anki color scheme?

This is mine:

I've considered doing this for several years and this is the first time I've seen an example that makes me want to actually do it.

Can you post the CSS?

Tokorode, I just found that there IS a way to get the Anki interface into Japanese. It is deeply hidden, in fact it's a slightly scary hack, but it works.

Worth knowing if you're tired of having your Anki staring at you in English every day!

Wow thank you CureDolly! You even wrote an article about it Big Grin

On a side note, you published the last three articles today? Because even if the dates diverge, I'm pretty sure those three weren't there few days ago xD I'm going to read them all now xD

Better to backup the whole Anki folder offline, then you have nothing to worry about. I'd be scared too if I was relying on Anki sync to preserve my data.

Anyway, since you pointed out that Anki does actually have a language setting and it's probably in prefs.db, I figured we can probably just edit that setting. And indeed we can Smile. It's 'en' for English and 'ja' for Japanese. (Backup first anyway, in case of mistakes!)

The screenshot is SQLite Management Studio, not sqlitestudio.pl (though that might work too)

Sorry to reply late. No, they weren't published today (now yesterday) but all three are pretty recent, over the last week.

@Helena-san: thank you for that. I tried editing the prefs.db file first but couldn't get into it. I seem to recall that you also do wizardry with Morphman. I think forcing Anki to create new prefs is about the limit of my ability and maybe a few other dummies. I did get as far as realizing the existence of SQLite but it all seemed awfy complicated. Nasakenai, ne.

Tokorode (again) do you think it necessary to back up the Anki folder? I don't believe Anki actually deletes anything. It is just that the prefs file tells it what to "see".

I could be wrong though.

Anki backs up your collection whenever you sync or exit; it guards against software/user-induced data loss but won't help if your hard drive fails.

Deleting a profile in Anki deletes everything, including the backups.

Yes, if something goes wrong, you can usually restore the lastest backup-xxx.apkg from the backup folder. That combined with sync is a fairly effective backup strategy (local backups covering the most common types of software/user-induced data loss, and sync covering hard drive failure). But the automatic local backups don't backup media and are all in the same place, and the online sync version can easily disappear if you make a mistake.

Syncing onto more than one device improves the situation, though restoring from the device not used last still requires great care about the sync issues.

To get into an SQLite DB, you just need a program that can open it (like opening an image in a paint program, or a Word document in a word processor). In this case, for editing text within a complex item, the program I posted above (SQLite Management Studio) is quite friendly. The program I usually use (Sqliteman) lacks the text-editing feature, so doing this would be a bit awkward even for a technical user.

I wrote a plugin which reuses MorphMan's databases to put words onto RTK cards. Maybe I'll try writing a plugin to change the language.

That would be great. If you do write such a plugin we'll definitely flag it on KawaJapa.

I am going to add a note on backing up the prefs file. I actually now wish I had done it. The reason is that the dates of my audio files (both 参加日 and 変更日) from the last year or so have now been changed to the date I did the change to Japanese (presumably because they were re-entered from online then).

This would not matter at all to a regular Anki user, since it does not affect the functioning of Anki or the review schedule in any way. But it has played minor havoc with the extra-Anki part of http://my rather eccentric sentences method which involves using sound files created in Anki. And the havoc is only minor because I already have most of them duplicated in folders of thousand-groups for my MP3 player.

I suppose the moral of that is, always back up because you can never predict the unintended consequences of an action!

I found a very relaxing color theme at - http://eclipsecolorthemes.org/?view=theme&id=21

On the front side, the keyword is blocked out in green. Hovering over kanji reveals furigana in blue. Clicking on the purple reveals keyword meaning in English.

Whilst reviewing, I try to avoid revealing the furigana. Because some of the sentences are ambiguous, I sometimes need to reveal the English meaning.

I really like your color scheme cophnia61! Big Grin You weren't kidding when you said you vocab deck setup was similar to mine lol even down to the isolation of the word on top! Cool

I took a break from my personal deck to work on core 2k/6k. I tried using the default production format but it just wasn't for me so I switched it to a recognition format similar to how I do vocab in general with all the core goodies still intact. Here are screenshots (images seemed too big to post):

Back: http://imgur.com/xNg4Vgk

I chose pink for the vocab color since it wasn't too abrasive on the eyes and the background I wanted an off white color feel. The rest of the text was originally black but while I was reviewing it looked strange to me so I decided to change up the rest too. Inspiration was this Tumblr post on Color Coding Notes 101

The post stated that they used 2 similar looking colors and a complementary color. I didn't exactly follow the 3 color rule but I did choose a darker pink and complementary color for pink, which was the dark green.

Changed my color scheme for my core deck to a dark theme. The color scheme is similar but with a darker background.

Also wanted to showcase my RTK deck which is also a dark theme.

This theme I wanted to just stick with 2 complementary colors in different shades. I find that the light orange as the kanji really stands out when reviewing. Made the keyword a darker shade of orange (it links to RevTK site if I ever need to look up stories) to give a direct correlation to the kanji--just it is with the original RTK setup. The blue for the Japanese keyword is a great contrast to the orange in that it is noticeable, but not the primary focus.

Nice colours.

That may not be the best word to associate with 'meadow' though

原稿 = original + draft = manuscript

草原 = grass + meadow = grassy plain

I try to choose colors I think would be used on sweet packaging, happy colors! But I also always prefer a pure black background, much easier on the eyes I feel. I wish more sites were black (hint hint^^)

I love cute packaging like this:

Thanks a lot! A lot of my Japanese keywords I got from the jalup mod RTK deck while others I kinda just found using jisho search for words containing desired kanji.

I use a *slightly* muted bright yellow background, kind of like the old Koohii website, because I read Somewhere on the Internet that yellow stimulates your brain... or something. (So it MUST BE TRUE!)

Red stimulates hunger though, so to avoid eating my phone by accident, I don't use that.

I also use images for each word now, which sometimes bogs me down. "I need an image for this word that doesn't suck!" Yeah... not efficient. The Core 10k deck comes with images, and about 90% are okay, but that 10%... that's... not okay. Big Grin

My light color scheme for my core deck had an off yellow background but it freaked too many ppl out and they suggested I do a darker theme. I will admit the darker theme flatters the green better than it did in the lighter theme but I plan to use a light color scheme for my personal vocab deck as I'm just used to seeing pastel like colors.

EDIT: I just realized now (right when I submitted the post) my light theme sorta resembles the koohii site with the pink and green xD I could have sworn I thought up of the pink/green combo on my own but I guess not. Subconsciously I must have been thinking about this site as I designed it. Tongue

@RawrPk lol, could be. I actually turned UP the yellow a bit on that deck. For the fonts, I turned them all to black, though, to speed things up for me, and tweaked things a little here and there.

Did you also get all of those images for the 10k deck? How did you scrape those images? The only image scraper I've found is DAnkImg Scraper, which doesn't run properly on my machine, but dang, it looks neat!

I actually just ogt the images from Nukemarine's Suggested Guide for Beginners thread. For the most part, the images have been good but it's only for the first 2k.

That's actually a really neat program! I'll have to try to see if it works for me.

Running Win7, latest Java, for some reason, it never seems to finish processing the file. I tried using a file with only 5 notes, to see if that was the problem, but even a tiny file like that never seems to finish, or maybe it never loads properly? I think it may be a read/write permission problem, but I'm not sure.
