I don't really get the point of the "report story" function?

#1
I am aware I am probably missing the obvious, but I do not really get the point of the "Report this story" button. Sorry, bear with me.
Undecided

This is my workflow when I forget a kanji and I think my story was ineffective:
-go to the story page,
-read the stories,
-if I find one I like I star it so it appears in the top of the page,
-if I don't fine one, I write one.

In all of this I totally miss the point... Yes, seldom some hidden stories make no sense (e.g., they are random insults), but in the most cases they are reasonable even if not my cup of tea.

So... what is the point of the "Report this story" button, how I am supposed to use it?
Huh

When I was going through RTK1 I would use it if I saw a story which insulted certain groups of people in ways which were clearly meant to be hurtful. There were definitely stories reported by others which confused me as to why they were reported though.

Some stories are off color or politically incorrect, the report feature aims to try and hide those so that they aren't the first thing that shows up. Honestly though, I think some of these not-PC stories though are some of the most memorable simply because they aren't something you'd say and provide a strong image.

Trolls. That's probably why. Some people will down vote/dislike/report everything simply because they can.

It's an indicator of how good the mnemonic will work. You know if a story has a lot of upvotes AND reports then you're likely to not forget it.

In addition to inappropriate stories, there have also been examples of stories that were simply wrong -- the person misunderstood the meaning of the keyword, etc.

Not at all. You don't have to be a dick to make a memorable story. All of my stories I remember best are literally carved in my brain and have nothing to do with racism or sexism.

I find the best stories are ones that are clever in one way or another. Regardless of levels of filth.

Although I enjoy the humour of Sarah Silverman and Jimmy Carr I do find some stories just seem to try too hard to be edgy and I am left thinking, "come on, really?"

Lets take a concrete example: http://kanji.koohii.com/study/kanji/%E6%99%BA

The first three most popular stories have few reports, but are in no way wrong, dirty, racist or what ever. They might not be memorable, but still I don't get it.

It doesn't have to actually DO anything to be useful.
It gives people who are offended by certain stories something to click. This stops them from messaging the admin about that story (who probably wouldn't remove it anyway).

Many reports also come from the buttons being tiny and easy to miss on mobile especially, but also on desktop. I've just never gotten around to redesign that part of the UI. If I do it today it'd have to be designed for mobile, as well as desktop and it just doesn't feel like it's worth the trouble to me at least.

Many people don't realize the vote / reports work as a toggle and can be undo'ed.

From "I don't understand" to "this is the coolest thing ever" in one comment. Smile Thanks.
